What is an Alternator?

Every car needs electricity to start and run even though it creates energy by burning fuel. The engine uses electricity to run, and your car's lights and cabin electronics need electric power, too. The car battery and the alternator work together to keep your car powered with electricity.

The alternator is an engine's electric generator, which runs when the engine is running. When the engine is not running, it's the car battery that provides electricity. How does the battery stay charged? That's the other job of the alternator: It recharges the battery while you drive. That way, it's has a full charge the next time you start the engine.

If your car develops problems keeping its battery charged, the issue could be the alternator. Bring it to our service center in Lima. Here at Tom Ahl Family of Dealerships, our professional technicians can help with any electrical problems that your car might have.
